Leeds Trinity Students’ Union has been awarded ‘Students’ Union of the Year’ at the annual Educate North & UK Leadership Awards.
It was a highly competitive category with Student Unions from the University of Cumbria, University of Chester and Newcastle University also on the shortlist. The criteria for the Student Union award particularly focused on examples of sector leading practice in student engagement, experience, support and innovation. LTSU was particularly praised for its leadership and demonstrable impact on students’ lives. Additionally we were commended for our practices reflecting the vital role students play as current and future leaders in society.
Over the current academic year the Union has worked with students to double the number of societies, seen an over 40% increase in training and recruitment of Course Reps compared to the previous year and risen by 10 places in BUCS due to the hard work of the Sport Clubs. The number of students involved in Union activity has increased and more students now vote at Leeds Trinity in elections than at most other Universities with over a third of students taking part. We also launched a new website bringing together all Union activity in one place including online membership of clubs and societies.
The award follows other recent good news of a 60 place increase in the independent annual WhatUni survey to 15th best Students’ Union in the country.
We of course always want to improve and if you are a current student we would love to know your views here.
Steph Little the Union President said "It is so great to have won this award after a couple of years of working really hard to better the lives of students. I look forward to the Students' Union growing and improving year on year from this strong foundation."
Professor Margaret A House, Vice-Chancellor at Leeds Trinity University, said:“LTSU is highly engaged with our student body; supporting clubs and societies, running events and offering valuable support to enhance student life at Leeds Trinity. I am immensely proud of our Students’ Union team, and would like to congratulate them all on their well-deserved success.”
