We are hosting a discussion with a panel, with representatives from the University and the West Yorkshire Police on Monday 5th February, at 1.30pm in The Lounge. Students attending the event will be able to enter to win one of three free Clubs & Societies Awards tickets! If you're attending the event, you can enter below:
In the UK a third of female students experience unwanted advances or sexual assault during their time at University, as well as 1 in 8 male students. These are statistics from students who have come forward.
60% of male students who have experienced sexual assault or abuse at university did not report their experience, even to friends or family. 43% percent of women also did not report their experience.
1% of all students in the UK have been raped during their studies, and last year under 25s made up 36% of Rape Crisis UK’s service users.
Because of this we want to change the culture that contributes towards these terrible statistics, and the way that the subject of consent is approached and peoples’ attitues towards it. We want to combat the current social stigma towards the idea of consent and ensure that both students and staff at Leeds Trinity are educated on what consent really looks like and what it really means.
The Students’ Union believes that Leeds Trinity should be a safe and comfortable campus and community for everyone who is a part of it, and because of this we want to emphasise and ensure that there is a zero tolerance towards sexual harassment and assault.
That’s why you’ll be seeing the I heart Consent logo around campus on everyone’s wrists this Freshers’ Week and on our move in weekend volunteer tops.
Through this campaign we hope to achieve a number of things, including a scheme to help students get home safely with Arrow taxis who the Students’ Union already work with, and an incentivised opportunity for our Sports Clubs and Societies to increase education around sexual assault and how to tackle it in social environments.
You can get involved by coming along to the Freshers’ Fair and pledging with us to counter the culture! We’ll be by the Students’ Union stall in the Gymnasium from 11am-3pm, come along and pledge your name and say hello!
