Leeds Trinity Students' Union is a charitable organisation, governed by the Board of Trustees. They are made up of three types of trustees, Officer Trustees (Ex-Offico, elected annually in the Annual Elections), External Trustees (Trustee's external of the Union, who are there to support and further our aims and goals) and Student Trustees (Student's appointed via Union Council on an annual basis, to provide diversity and challenge to the Board).
Our staff team work closely with the Board of Trustees to ensure that the day-to-day running and the operational management is taking place, and that the elected Sabbatical and Part Time Officers are supported in their roles.
We are a charity and we have three charity objects:
1.To promote the interest and welfare of students at Leeds Trinity University by representing, supporting and advising students
2.To be the recognised representative between students and Leeds Trinity University and other external bodies
3.To provide social, cultural, sporting and recreational activities and forums for discussions and debate to allow for personal development of students.
In March each year students are elected to over 200 roles across the Union. This includes Course Reps, Sports Club and Society Committee members, Student Council members and two students who take on a paid, full time role as either President or Vice President. In March Charles Isherwood was re-elected as President and was joined by Jake Bainbridge as Vice President. Alongside this as a charity in its own right, LTSU appoints trustees as and when vacancies arise. The Student Council provide the democratic, political leadership of the organisation. The Board of Trustees are legally responsible for the organisation.
Both the Sabbatical Officers and Trustees are supported by the General Manager of the Union who ensures the organisation is legally compliant, ensures the strategic plan of the Union is enacted and manages the staff team and finances. There are currently five further core full and part time staff roles that work with the Sabbatical Officers and the General Manager. Between them they give independent, impartial advice, support a range of events from Freshers’ Week to Grad Ball with Give it a Go activities along the way, Sports Clubs and Societies, Course Representatives, student voice and a new venture for 2018 after much student feedback of an on campus convenience and clothing shop. A team of current Leeds Trinity students are also employed to support with student engagement and digital communications.
There are currently 7 members of the Board of Trustees. External trustees on the Board include a financial consultant with over 35 years’ experience, a solicitor who works in Higher Education advising another University on their legal compliance and a leading academic in Mental Health who is responsible for primary and secondary teaching students at another University. They are joined by three student trustees and the two sabbatical officers. The Board of Trustees are reviewing their performance against the Charity Commission Third Version of the Governance Code. The version we use for this is the NUS version which has had endorsement from the Charity Commission.
