What is Pride Month?

Pride Month is an annual celebration that takes place each June as a tribute to those who were involved in the Stonewall Riots in 1969, when NYC police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay club located in Greenwich village. LGBTQ+ protestors subsequently demanded the establishment of places where they could go without fear of arrest, catalysing the LGBTQ+ rights movement in the US and around the world. The first official Pride parade took place the following year in 1970 and is an opportunity to embrace, support, remember, and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community.

Leeds Trinity SU's Commitment to Supporting our LGBTQ+ Members and Staff

It's Pride Month! It's a great time to reflect on how we can support the LGBTQ+ community as members or allies. At Leeds Trinity SU, this is something we strive to do all year round. But what have we been doing to work towards inclusion for our LGBTQ+ members and staff?

  • You told us on Student Say that you wanted Gender Neutral Toilets - the Uni have agreed to this and they will be introduced across campus
  • All SU staff received training from Yorkshire MESMAC to help better support our LGBTQ+ students
  • SU staff wear pronoun badges and use pronouns in email signatures (this was after a Student Say idea too!)
  • Officers have run campaigns on inclusivity in sport like the rainbow laces campaign. Sports teams have signed pledges committing to be safe spaces for LGBTQ+ members
  • You annually elect an LGBTQ+ Officer to represent students
  • We celebrate different events like LGBT+ History Month, Pride Month, and others
  • Our advice service has specific resources for LGBTQ+ students

This month we are collaborating with students and staff thoughout the university to show inclusivity for all of the LGBTQ+ community!

Lara and Rigby are both in their second year of university here at Leeds Trinity Univerity, they have both completed a placemenet year in Gender Equality! Please take a look at their Gender Identity Blog that is full of information and discussions on Transgender and Cicgender, Non-binary, Genderfluid and so much more...

"Euphoria is the opposite of dysphoria. When someone feels joy and comfort with a certain way of expressing their gender, that's euphoria. Experiencing euphoria is a good way of knowing if a gender identity is the one for you – if you’re wanting to identify in a certain way. Wearing certain things like a chest binder, specific styles of clothing, using a new name, using new pronouns, etc… can help someone feel gender euphoria. These things can take time to figure out so the person may fluctuate and change between how they want to present themselves and be addressed, but no matter these changes, the way the person feels is always valid."

Why do we celebrate Pride month in June?

The Stonewall Riots, also named the Stonewall Uprising, began in the early hours of June 28, 1969 when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, a LGBTQ+ pub located in Greenwich Village in New York City.

The raid sparked a riot among bar patrons and neighborhood residents as police hauled employees and patrons out of the bar, leading to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside, in neighboring streets and in nearby Christopher Park...... The Stonewall Riots served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement  in the United States and across the world the month s now celebrated globally to honour the brave individuals who stood up to the system to fight for their rights.
