We have achieved Green Impact 'Excellent' for the second year in a row!

More about the award

Possible levels; Good, Very Good, Excellent

Last year

The Students’ Union achieved the 'Excellent' Green Impact Award. Chris Dow (VP), along with the staff team, Clubs and Societies, and Student Council Sustainability officer 2020-21 were challenged with maintaining our Excellent award for another year. Despite a challenging year because of Covid restrictions, thanks to the hard work of Chris, Chelsey, Laura, student volunteers, and SU staff, we are thrilled to receive Excellent for the second year in a row.

A recap of (some of!) our sustainability work this year

1. Menstrual health and hygiene

Your student officers have been working on campaigns to ensure that all students have access to free, sustainable sanitary products. Thanks to a Student Say idea, we'll also be stocking menstrual cups in the SU Shop when it reopens. Plus, we celebrated Menstrual Hygiene Day with our members this year!

2. Go Green Week

This year we hosted a completely virtual Go Green Week to engage students with sustainability work. Students were sent seeds to grow their own food, and Chris hosted virtual seed planting and plant pot making workshops.

3. Eliminating single-use plastics

This year, because of a Student Say idea, the SU have committed to never handing out single-use plastic freebies. We're also working on reducing our single-use plastics in StUdio and the SU Shop. Watch this space.

4. Tracking the SU's C02 usage

We have started to track the CO2 usage of the SU to make sure we're reducing our carbon footprint wherever we can.

5. Sustainability in the Curriculum

This year we ran workshops for Course Reps on how sustainability can be embedded in the curriculum (and why it's really important that it is).

6. Working with LTU

Chris has worked in collaboration with the University this year, supporting their sustainability work as well as ours. We're really excited to see all the positive outcomes from this work.

7. Reducing StUdio's impact on the environment

We've had loads of great conversations and actions to reduce StUdio's impact on the environment. From reducing plastics, to introducing recycling bins, to developing green spaces, there's lots to be excited about.

We are so thrilled to have been awarded Excellent this year and will continue to work hard over the coming semesters to ensure we can maintain and improve our sustainability work.
